Expressions of Devotion: Buying Engagement Rings, Wedding Rings, and Wedding Bands Online

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Antigone Arthur Ritual symbolism abounds in everything we do; this is particularly the case when an individual commits their love and devotion to another and offers a promise of marriage. The custom of offering and exchanging engagement rings and wedding bands is a time honored tradition rich in symbolism and meaning that has been carried on for centuries. As time has changed so have consumer traditions and buying patterns. The rich tradition of exchanging vows as a symbol of love and devotion is still a traditional time honored ritual practiced in many cultures. Certain aspects of engagement and marriage have changed with time however. Whereas in times of old a couple might take several outings together in search of the perfect engagement rings or wedding bands, in modern times more and more couples are buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online. Thanks to the internet and the resulting access to a global marketplace, couples are realizing they have more options available to them all from the comforts of their living room. Some couples are even going to the extreme, not only buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online, but also purchasing wedding gowns, flowers and even participating in virtual marriages. How have these changes come about? What can today’s modern couple expect when planning a walk down the aisle? The Engagement Ring The practice of a groom offering his bride to be an engagement ring as a promise of love and affection began nearly 2 centuries ago in the United States; many associate the giving of engagement rings with a need to express implied commitment and understanding forever. The term “A Diamond is Forever” was in fact used as a means of reinforcing the notion that an engagement ring is a commitment from one fianc to another to live a life together in marital harmony forever. The phrase is also a popular advertising catch phrase that reinforces the notion that love and devotion are part of everyday symbolisms that require an outlet for expression. The use of engagement rings as a token of love and affection is a norm that instilled in the hearts and minds of most people, in part due to heavy marketing and advertising from diamond ring and other jewelry manufacturers, and in part based on the needs of mankind to project symbolism into everyday living. Wedding Rings Once a couple has decided to walk down the aisle together, the next step is often purchasing wedding rings together. Because there are so many different kinds to choose from, it helps to know what distinguishes one wedding band from another. There are several tips that you can follow to ensure that you purchase wedding bands that suit your individual preferences and budget. First and foremost consumers should keep in mind that it certainly pays to do their homework. The best advice for wedding ring shoppers is patience. Couples should take the time to shop around and look at several different wedding bands, and have in mind an idea of what exactly they are looking for. Far too often customers compromise because they feel they can’t find exactly what they are looking for; chances are you can find what you are looking for at a reasonable price, if you give yourself plenty of time to research wedding rings thoroughly before purchasing. An article in Today’s Summer Bride in Summer of 1989 suggested that consumers be patient and shop wisely, but also have faith that they will find what they are looking for. The article was referring to purchase of a wedding gown, but buying wedding rings follows the same logic. You probably didn’t bump into your partner overnight, and likewise you should expect it to take some time to find the perfect wedding rings as symbols of your love and devotion to one another. Marriage represents a commitment and shared love between two people. Wedding ceremonies are often shrouded in symbolism, among the most significant of which is the exchange of wedding rings between husband and wife. Buying Engagement Rings, Wedding Rings and Wedding Bands Online Society is ever changing, and with the advent of technology and access to a global marketplace, more and more consumers are buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online rather than shopping for these ritual symbols of devotion in a traditional store. Buying online affords consumers the luxury of perusing the widest selection of rings available from the convenience of their home. Some people have infused the process of buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online with romanticism. New rituals and traditions are being built in the face of modern technology. In fact, some couples are planning entire wedding ceremonies through their computers. A virtual ceremony can be broadcast to friends and family members the world over! What advice can we offer the couple interested in shopping for wedding accessories online? Here are some suggestions for a successful venture: Keep an open mind. Know what type of engagement rings (diamond, gemstone, bands) or wedding rings you are looking for, but consider looking at many different varieties. You may change your mind about what type of ring best symbolizes your relationship and love. Make shopping online romantic! Place some candles around the computer, turn on your song and have some wine! Buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online can be just as fun and exciting as buying them in person… and even more fun when you create a loving and warm atmosphere. Be prepared to spend a fair amount of time perusing different styles and makes. There are an incredible variety of engagement rings and wedding bands available: titanium, platinum, white gold, traditional gold, silver, gemstone, diamond… the list goes on and on. Once you have reviewed a fair number of styles be sure to compile a list of your favorites to narrow down your search. Know your size! Nothing is more obnoxious than having to have a ring re-sized before you wear it. There are several websites that offer jewelry sizing online. Typically women wear between a size 5-9 and men between sizes 8-12. The average for men: a 10; the average for women: a 7. A Symbol of Your Love and Devotion Ritual symbols such as the exchange of engagement rings and wedding rings are time honored traditions that will likely continue through the next two centuries. Though the manner in which people shop and commit themselves to one another is changing, the time honored tradition of exchanging vows and bands as a symbol of love and devotion will not likely change in the near future. Take advantage of modern technology, and consider buying engagement rings, wedding rings and wedding bands online. You’d be surprised the variety available, and pleasantly surprised by how exciting it can be shopping from the comforts of your living room, office, or bedroom… About The Author: Antigone Arthur is a successful freelance writer with 10 years of professional experience providing consumers with informative articles on such topics as engagement ring design, and diamond wedding rings. The Nature Of Assets

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Michael Russell Legal ownership is not the only criterion for classifying something in accounting terms as an asset; for instance, someone buys an item on hire purchase but does not become the owner of that item until the full purchase price has been paid. Nevertheless, the item is still recorded as an asset together with the corresponding obligation. Similarly, although a lessee never becomes the owner of the item leased, he may record that item as an asset providing that the corresponding obligation is also shown. In an accounting sense ‘ownership’ usually implies ‘legal ownership’, but there are exceptions; an interest in a tangible or intangible object, or a right to value, combined with the right of possession and the right of use also constitutes an asset for the interested party. If a person is the owner of the value or economic benefit arising from a specific source, then that source is an asset for the person concerned and he is the economic owner, although he may not be the legal owner. In such case accounting substance should take precedence over legal form in ascertaining the most suitable accounting procedure. The chief function of accounting is to determine profits. The generation of income, however, requires capital investment in order to provide the facilities needed by an enterprise to operate continuously and indefinitely. Historically, expenses that are incurred by not allocated as a cost during a period are deferred costs. From an accounting point of view, they represent an asset. If these costs can be recovered within a year, they are current assets and if they are recoverable over a longer period they are fixed assets. This classification of assets is essential for determining profits and also to show the enterprise’s position at a specific time, in other words, the composition of its assets and the nature of its obligations. The purpose of acquiring fixed assets is to use them to generate income. They are not acquired for the purpose of resale. The fixed assets must produce goods that generate income, or in other words, they must be used in the business’ operations. The largest category of fixed assets in accounting terms is tangible, such as buildings, machinery and vehicles. Land that is not subject to depreciation or depletion through use, since it is never ‘consumed’ is also considered as a tangible fixed asset. When evaluating buildings, machinery and vehicles these assets are subject to depreciation that must be apportioned annually as a cost. Natural resources that, through use, are also subject to depletion, such as mines, oil and gas wells and plantations are also considered as tangible fixed assets. Another group of assets is intangible fixed assets such as patents, copyrights, trademarks’ and goodwill. Deferred expenses and debits such as the preliminary expenses of a company are also considered in accounting terms as intangible fixed assets. Finally, the last to be considered as an asset are external assets also known as investments. These include fixed period investments earning a fixed income, investments in ordinary shares of other companies, sundry investments such as pension funds, housing schemes and insurance policies and, lastly, investment properties. Smoothies

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

By Lizel Salter In this day and age where eating healthy has become so important, so many people do not like to eat fruit and vegetables. Even though they know it is good for them, they still prefer not to eat it. It can be very difficult getting used to a healthy lifestyle if all you are used to, is take away fast food. The first change is having to get home and cook. Immediately you loose about halve an hour of your “alone” time. What is important thought, is to think of this as an opportunity to spend this time with your children and husband/wife. Make it fun and interesting. Dont loose your smile when you think that you will have to eat more fruits during the day and evening. There is a very easy solution that will be fun for the whole family. I think smoothies are one of the greatest inventions of our time. I know you get a lot of fruit juices and they are truly great, but some of the manufacturers do add a lot of sugar. Try to keep the sugar intake low by making your own. All you need is a blender, or smoothie maker and fruit. It is that simple. Try to play with the flavours. You can add whatever you like. If you do not try it, how will you know if you like it or not? My husband and I played around with some flavours the past weekend and I can tell you, it tasted great. You can get recipe books for how to make smoothies, but as I said, make it up as you go along. First we tried mixing banana, strawberries, kiwi fruit, grapes and plain yoghurt. It tasted LOVELY. This is not a sweet combination, so if you have a sweet tooth, maybe you should try our second recipe. The next one we tried, we used a mango, banana, yellow melon and yoghurt. This was n sweeter option, but the banana was a little strong. Maybe you should try to use only halve a banana or replace it with some other fruit. We thought that next time we will try to replace it with a strawberry or two. Dont know how it will taste, but we will definitely try. Making smoothies is a great time to spend together, learning to listen to each other and compromise on what fruit you want to try and just have GREAT fun! It will definitely tickle your laughing muscles, believe me. Go on, try to make your own smoothie and have a great time! What Colors To Wear For Weddings At Different Times

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Victor Epand Me and my husband going to my friends wedding and I am wearing an oriental style dress that is in a champagne/gold color. The Chinese are big into silver, jade (a semi-precious stone which is usually a light, translucent green, but does come in other colors) and turquoise (another semi=precious stone which is a vivid opaque blue and usually marbled with white and/or black veins). Because your gown is gold I would recommend sticking with gold jeweler. If your dress is adorned with a beautiful pattern as they so often are, I’d recommend some simple earrings such as diamond studs or delicate diamond drops. I would choose a dainty watch or bracelet (in just plain gold or with a little bit of sparkle), wearing both with an ornate dress would look too much and take away from the dress. If the dress is plain then do go for more ornate jeweler with colored gemstones (you can get away with silver with a plain dress, its also cheaper and more readily available!). If you go to any web site and type in ‘Chinese earrings’ and then click on ‘images’ it gives you some great ideas. The round Chinese symbol drop earrings are nice and some of the chandelier styles look very pretty (although some of these are more ‘Asian’ than specifically Chinese). You can also get away with the bracelet and watch together. Is your gent brave? If so, a pink or lilac shirt would look fab with his charcoal suit. It’s a very modern look and if he’s not wearing a tie then an open top button would look great. White will look dated and if he goes for yellow to tone with you, it’s just not going to go well with the grey. Black is a good color and certain blues, but it HAS to be the right blue so you’d need to choose carefully. When you go shopping, take the suit jacket if you can to help you find a good match. For a more formal style wedding then a black dress (cocktail type) is okay as long as it is an appropriate style and won’t detract from the bride. If the wedding is early in the day then I’d forego black for a soft color. Another time that black or white is appropriate is if the bride wants a “black/white” wedding and requests guests to wear one or the other. According to my sources, for a formal day-time wedding, women should wear elegant short dresses or suits and men may wear a dark suit. Then you’ll want to change into a long evening gown and tux for the reception. Without knowing the other colors in your wedding, it is hard to tell you exactly what would work. However, in general you should stick to lighter colors for daytime events. Red, yellow, gold, light silver and any pastel color would be appropriate. Darker colors such as black, plum, burgundy, hunter green, etc. are more appropriate for evening hours. If you’re still set on the color black, however, you may just want to change the length of the dress. A black tea-length or cocktail-length dress would be appropriate for an afternoon ceremony. Here Is What Helped Me Learn How To Meet Women

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Morgan Hamilton I just moved into a new town a few weeks ago so I was feeling rather lonely. Now, it’s not that I didn’t know how to meet women, but that I was just in a whole different scene. This is because I grew up in a pretty small, but liberal town. It is easy to meet women in a small town that you are familiar with. In my hometown, there were local parties all the time, everyone knew everyone, and enough new people moved in and out to keep things interesting and fresh. However, understanding how to meet women became much more difficult when I relocated into a large city. For instance, I never really figured out how to talk to attractive women at bars. It was not an issue of shyness because Im not a shy person. I think that its because I was used to a more intimate environment. Approaching a stranger is a much more daunting task even if I knew how to meet women at local parties where I already knew many of the guests. Of course, I tried every trick that I could imagine. However, the pickup lines and dating services I tried did not work. Nothing seemed to come through for me even after I posted my personal on how to meet women websites. My romantic life remained rather bleak, even if I had a few dates and made some good friends. I also knew that I would never find happiness in the big city if I did not learn how to meet women soon. In my desperation, I finally tried one of those self-esteem coaching schemes. I disregarded the fact that it sounded pretty silly because I cant think of anything else. Anyway, it seemed to me that the speaker really seemed to know how to meet women and the techniques that he showed me really worked. I was able to approach any one that I wanted to after I took that coaching scheme. However, I had learned nothing about how to meet women that appealed to me. The tricks and tips that I’ve learned do not work with women who are my type. I can easily approach women who are easily impressed by a clever line delivered with self-confidence. On the other hand, cheap male bravado are ineffective when used on women who are deep, intelligent, and soulful. Oh well, perhaps I should just go back to my hometown. When You Need A Cheap Weekend Break Look Online For The Best Deals

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

By Dominic Ferrara Many online travel sites offer several cheap weekend breaks to those looking for a getaway. For the very adventurous traveler they can spend several weekends a year visiting a new and different place. Its an affordable way to take a trip. The reason that cheap weekend breaks are so popular is their value. Most airlines strive to fill every available seat on their flights. By offering discounted seats at the last minute they are ensuring that the seat wont remain empty. This translates to them making some revenue on that otherwise vacant spot. Hotels see the value in cheap weekend breaks as well. Empty rooms mean lost money to every hotel. If they can offer the room to someone willing to pay a reduced rate because its short notice, they will gladly do that. You can often find rooms at many four star hotels at inexpensive rates when you are searching for cheap weekend breaks. Although many cheap weekend breaks are only offered near the end of the week, with some research you might be able to plan in advance. You are obviously not likely to find cheap weekend breaks during holiday weekends. Many people travel during these times and airfare and hotel accommodations are often offered at peak rates. However there are certain time periods during the year when cheap weekend breaks are readily available. These are during the off season months for travel which normally include the latter part of winter, spring and the fall. Obviously it would be difficult to find cheap weekend breaks over Memorial Day, Easter weekend or Labor Day. Families plan months in advance to take a trip during these times to avoid missed school days for their children. Airfare and hotel prices generally are at the high level of the spectrum and if you are flexible youll want to find a weekend where the cost is much lower for the same trip. Regularly checking prices of airlines and hotels is the best way to keep informed of when cheap weekend breaks are available. If you notice a reasonably priced getaway on a weekend when youve got free time its a great idea to take the plunge and invest in some fun time away from home. 3 Ways To Cut Costs in Your Legal Practice

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Jack McDonough Most attorneys do not think of themselves entrepreneurs. However, a law practice is a business and accordingly, you should be looking for ways to generate profit wherever you can. Cutting costs is one way to create more profits for you. Here are at least 3 painless ways that you can cut costs. The cost of paperwork You know this well creating draft after draft of documents, along with mailing, faxing and copying them all. More and more offices now rely on recycling in-office paperwork. Have staff use blue markers to red-line through the used sides of paper that can be reused for faxing, copying etc. If an important document needs its own page copy it. Another paperwork reducer is using e-faxes. (A personal favorite of mine.) And always consider whether documents can be faxed or emailed, rather than wasting paper. Draft documents should only be printed on recycled paper. Another tip - attorneys often print out multiple copies of things, utilizing expensive printer cartridges, when it would be much cheaper to simply make a photocopy Duplication of legal resources If your Lexis or Westlaw services allow you to access certain periodicals or other publications online, you will not then need to also obtain the print version. Often, it is less expensive to invest in the additional database than to keep on purchasing the updates to the hardbound books. It may feel comfortable to hang onto the older, more comfortable way of doing things, but I find that attorneys usually underestimate how intelligent and resourceful that they can be. You may want to also look into your local law school or court law library. For infrequently used resources, it will be less expensive to make a trip to such facilities. You should also look into bar association resources, as well as discounts that may be offered through them. Finally, for small firms or sole practitioners, it is often beneficial to pair up with other practitioners and pool your resources. Bill Your Clients Lastly, it is important to keep track of and recognize what can and should be billed to the client when it comes to administrative/office expenses. Copying charges, phone calls, postage, research costs and other expenses may be billed back to the client. It is now becoming a common enough practice that your client will likely not think twice about absorbing these costs once you explain that such expenses will be passed along to them when they retain you. Such cost shifting may be a bit more administrative work, but it will allow you to pass on a substantial portion of your costs and ultimately generate a higher profit margin for you in your practice.
