Modern Day Idolatry, Modern Day Apostles Series; Article Two

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Rascal Miles In our series Introduction, Article One, I promised: “This series, “Modern Day Apostles,” will focus on who and what Apostles are and what they are called to do.” One of the things that Apostle’s do is maintain contact ~ through correspondence ~ with other believers. This was done in the past primarily by letters. Many writings of the Apostles have been called letters to the churches and epistles, baring the name of the writer or the “Church” to which the “Letter” was to be delivered. Many Apostles, whose letters have been saved, made their way into what is now generally called “The Holy Bible.” The majority of our Bible is made up mostly of those letters. Only the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are not. The Apostles letters frequently addressed problems that were apparent to the authors, whether by report or The Holy Spirit’s revelation. Some of the authors are loving and tactful in their presentations while others are quite blunt. I often enjoy the CEV ( Contemporary English Version) translation for its clarity. For example, (CEV) 1 John 1: 4 We are writing to tell you these things, because this makes us truly happy. 5 Jesus told us that God is light and doesn’t have any darkness in him. Now we are telling you. 6 If we say that we share in life with God and keep on living in the dark, we are lying and are not living by the truth. 7 But if we live in the light, as God does, we share in life with each other. And the blood of his Son Jesus washes all our sins away. 8 If we say that we have not sinned, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth isn’t in our hearts. 9 But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and his message isn’t in our hearts. (CEV) James 1:1 From James, a servant of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings to the twelve tribes scattered all over the world. 2 My friends, be glad, even if you have a lot of trouble. 3 You know that you learn to endure by having your faith tested. 4 But you must learn to endure everything, so that you will be completely mature and not lacking in anything. 5 If any of you need wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given to you. God is generous and won’t correct you for asking. 6 But when you ask for something, you must have faith and not doubt. Anyone who doubts is like an ocean wave tossed around in a storm. 7 If you are that kind of person, you can’t make up your mind, and you surely can’t be trusted. So don’t expect the Lord to give you anything at all. Today, some letters are written to believers and delivered via ezine articles. For those who can receive them, present day observations and problems are addressed. I’d like to examine the worship of idols in light of many of today’s problems that believers have. According to a respected on-line dictionary:1. idol a. An image used as an object of worship. b. A false god. 2. One that is adored, often blindly or excessively. Something visible but without substance. Most believers would say that they do not practice idolatry. Yet, from what both the Old and the New Testaments say, many do. The scriptures also say: (NKJV) Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (NASB) 2 Kings 17:15 They rejected His statutes and His covenant which He made with their fathers and His warnings with which He warned them. And they followed vanity and became vain, and went after the nations which surrounded them, concerning which the LORD had commanded them not to do like them. I suggest that in our land we have become like them too. Many have their garden buddha, wooden totem, their “Harmless” statue (a three-dimensional image of a human being or animal that is sculpted, modeled, cast, or carved), sacred shrine, patron saints, cement monuments, ceramic frogs, antique dolls, unicorns, dragonflies, and little angels. Little do most know that such are not “Harmless.” Do you think God is impressed, or is He in some way glorified, by our naked little cherubs who are supposed to be cute? Are not the little playful angelic representations really making a mockery of and deeming His mighty angels? Think about it (CEV) 1 Timothy 4:1 God’s Spirit clearly says that in the last days many people will turn from their faith. They will be fooled by evil spirits and by teachings that come from demons. (CEV) Revelation 9:20 The people who lived through these terrible troubles did not turn away from the idols they had made, and they did not stop worshiping demons. They kept on worshiping idols that were made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood. Not one of these idols could see, hear, or walk. 21 No one stopped murdering or practicing witchcraft or being immoral or stealing. “Okay,” some will say, “I can accept that.” I wonder how many of those who do not have these problems can say that they would not have a problem parting with their humanized sporting trophies, TVs, their computer chat groups, or their video games? When someone jumps to defend such idols, I can’t help but question why. Is this normal? Or does something that they don’t recognize have power over them? The 1st commandment: (CEV) Exodus 20:1 God said to the people of Israel: 2 I am the LORD your God, the one who brought you out of Egypt where you were slaves. 3 Do not worship any god except me. 4 Do not make idols that look like anything in the sky or on earth or in the ocean under the earth. 5 Don’t bow down and worship idols. I am the LORD your God, and I demand all your love. If you reject me, I will punish your families for three or four generations. (CEV) Joshua 24:23 Joshua said, “But you still have some idols, like those the other nations worship. Get rid of your idols! You must decide once and for all that you really want to obey the LORD God of Israel.” (NKJV) 1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner — not even to eat with such a person. (CEV) Revelation 21:8 But I will tell you what will happen to cowards and to everyone who is unfaithful or dirty-minded or who murders or is sexually immoral or uses witchcraft or worships idols or tells lies. They will be thrown into that lake of fire and burning sulphur. This is the second death. Perhaps it is appropriate that I end Modern Day Idolatry Modern Day Apostles Series Article Two with a scripture from our brother the Apostle, Paul? 5 Tips for Burning More Calories Starting Today

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Gregg Gillies When trying to lose fat and build some muscle so you can reshape your body, you need to find simple tricks to eliminate or burning more calories, whether it’s through your weight training and cardio program, or through your nutrition plan. Eat more vegetables. Try mixing and matching fresh vegetables for variety. Besides the numerous health benefits, most veggies are full of fiber, which will fill you up, as well as burn more calories than eating other foods. Go ahead and snack, just snack on good stuff, like raisins, nuts (especially almonds) veggies and dried fruit. It’s important to eat frequently when trying to lose fat or build muscle. Going too long between meals will burn off muscle and cause your body to store fat. This will lower your metabolism, making it even more difficult to lose fat. And then it becomes a vicious cycle. You keep cutting calories to compensate for your lowered metabolism and your body keeps slowing down your metabolism even more and storing body fat, thinking it’s protecting you from starvation. In addition, you are more likely to binge and eat a whole lot of food you shouldn’t eat. Speaking of nuts, add nuts to your yogurt and salads. Chopped nuts make a great alternative to breaded style garnishes like croutons. Specific food combinations can help to burn calories by ramping up your metabolism. Eat carbs that are rich in fiber. They take longer to digest and you will feel fuller for longer periods of time. Along with carbs rich in fiber, take in more protein. Your body burns more calories when you eat protein than it burns digesting either fats or carbohydrates. Eating more protein to burn fat was confirmed in a study published in the American Journal of Physiology. One group was fed a high protein diet (just over one gram per pound of bodyweight per day) while the second group consumed a protein diet near equal to that of the RDA. The group eating the high protein diet burned more fat than the group consuming protein near equal to the RDA. Want to burn fat or build muscle? Get lots of fiber and protein. Eating protein also helps to prevent muscle loss while dieting. You saw what loss of muscle can do to your fat loss efforts in step two. Yogurt can help you lose weight while protecting muscle. A recent study of overweight people who ate three servings of yogurt daily for 12 weeks lost 22% more weight, 61% more body fat and 81% more abdominal fat than people who ate a similar number of calories but no dairy products. Make sure to get yogurt with real fruit and no added sugar. Yogurt is also an easy and convenient snack and containg high quality protein as well. Put these 5 tips into practice and your new muscle building, fat burning machine (your body) will reward you for it. Gregg Gillies is the author of Get Fit Fast! Medical Testing: Health By The Numbers Doesn’t Work

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr._Randy_Wysong] Dr. Randy Wysong Perhaps one of the most insidious dangers in modern technology is medical testing. Although it would be nice to be able to visit our doctor and get all hooked up with electrodes, inflatable cuffs, probes, needles and catheters and have a read-out telling us exactly how we are working and where there is a problem, that is a myth, not the reality. Such testing creates false confidence and the illusion for people that they are being wise and practicing preventive medicine. But prevention is not detecting existing disease. Diagnosis is not to be confused with cause or cure. Not only do patients have these misconceptions, the entire medical industry does as well. Modern medicine is focused on naming diseases and treating symptoms, not preventing disease and addressing causes. Medical tests (done on yourself or by others) give a false sense of control and knowledge. The better choice is to take every step we can to modify life-style and nutritional habits to actually create health, not simply live life with gusto and have yearly stress tests and mammograms. Waiting for disease (reacting to injury, which disease is) to strike and then taking action is certainly not an intelligent approach. None of this speaks to the waste in much of the $200+ billion a year that is spent on laboratory and clinical tests. Not only do they drain our economy and not create health, they are often inaccurate and unnecessary. Some 75% of doctors surveyed admitted to performing more tests than necessary. In one study of 25,000 tests, only 20% of them reproduced the same result 90% of the time. In another study, 197 out of 200 were cured by simply repeating the same tests. (Wysong, RL. Laboratory self-testing. Wysong Health Letter. March 1992.) This brings me to a serious danger of laboratory testing: a false positive or false negative. If the test is falsely positive, the emotional trauma from believing you may have a serious disease can be enough to create a disease. Thus a test can make a well person sick. A false negative could send you on your way happily believing that everything is fine and that no life modifications are necessary. Meanwhile, the disease continues to incubate and spread. Medical tests have inherent dangers like any other medical procedure and should be submitted to only with that understanding. Even entering a hospital or doctors office poses the risk of exposure to infectious disease (nosocomial infection). A sterile needle to draw blood could result in a fatal (albeit rare) systemic infection. Squeezing breasts for a mammogram can activate dormant cancerous tissue and increase the spread of cancerous cells (metastases) by 80%. (Greenburg, DS. NCI blasted for mammography confusion. The Lancet. 345(8942): 129.) Pap smears are performed millions of times a year yet have never been proven to change morbidity or mortality. (McCormick, JS. Cervical smears: a questionable practice? The Lancet. 2: 207-209. 1989.) Ultrasound may influence fetal growth. (Newnham, JP, et al. Effects of frequent ultrasound during pregnancy: a randomized controlled trial. The Lancet. 342(8876): 887-91.) X-rays are always dangerous (carcinogenic) and their effects are cumulative over a lifetime. Vaginal and rectal exams can introduce infection. Cancers penetrated with biopsy needles may increase the spread of cancer to sentinel lymph nodes by as much as 50% over lump excision. It is estimated 1 in 20 liver biopsies result in new tumors. (Evans, GH, et al. Safety of and necessity for needle biopsy of liver tumours. The Lancet. 1: 620. 1987.) Let the buyer (patient) beware. Health is something you do to yourself, not something others do to you with machines or analysis. Health by the numbers of cholesterol, blood pressure, prostate antigens, white cell count and the like is a fantasy. Subscribing to this idea will start you on a slippery slope of medications, medications to treat the side effects of medications, surgeries and other interventions that destroy health, not build it. This is not to suggest that diagnostic tests are not important for refractory diseases or those to which no reasonable cause can be assigned. But as a preventive measure for healthy individuals the benefits of the practice are dubious at best. (See article on medicine as the [http://www.wysong.net/health/post_77_061902.shtml] greatest threat to health by the author.) The best test of health is to evaluate yourself. If you feel well, leave well enough alone, no medical test should convince you otherwise. The best test is to examine your life-style and nutritional practices against the standard of genetic context. We are adapted to fresh air and water, sunshine, exercise and fresh natural foods. (See CD [http://wysong.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WOTTPWS&Product_Code=EDCD21&Category_Code=EDUAIDS&Product_Count=0] the master key by the author). If you are not living as you are genetically programmed, do it. By so doing you will not only be preventing, but reversing disease. Its easy, cheap and has passed the test of time in being the best medicine ever invented. Loan Officer Marketing: How to Build Magnetic Campaigns

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Jeffrey Nelson Keeping your name visible by advertising consistently generates awareness. Getting quoted in the media creates publicity. Making guest appearances at real estate offices and at networking events builds confidence with prospects. And when you combine the different elements, you have the power of an integrated campaign that presents a consistent image for your prospects and clients. Its from integrated campaigns that generate magnetism, meaning the messages youre sending real estate agents help draw them toward your services. The structure of an integrated campaign relies on three components: communication channels, reach & frequency and most wanted response. Communication Channels A channel is the path used to transmit the message. Campaigns depend on various channels of communication to transfer information. An integrated campaign uses multiple channels simultaneously. Channels include electronic, direct communication, and media. As a rule, select channels and sub-channels that your targeted audience uses regularly. Presenting your message in a format that your target audience is already reading can increase the probability of your item being read. Electronic Channel In a multi-channel world, communication has become increasingly complex and technology based. For example, the electronic channel uses email, fax, telephone and web sites to transport messages from you to your targeted audience. Email provides a direct communication channel, rather than a broadcast channel. Fax transmission is a physical communication medium, and has a more official aspect than email. An agent-focused web site, if you place submission forms, online support, newsletters and visual impact on it, is a web-based communication channel. Direct Communication A channel that can only transmit a message to one person at a time is considered a direct communication channel. It permits interactivity, the opportunity for both you and the Agent to respond and react. In a personal communication channel, you and the prospect communicate directly with each other over the telephone or in person. Media Refers to the entire set of channels through which it is possible to transmit messages to some Agents or an entire group. The channel can take the form of broadcast, like TV and radio, print, such as newspapers, magazines and direct mail, display media includes billboards, signs and posters. Channel Mix As a guide, use these questions to determine which channels would be most appropriate for your integrated campaign. Ask yourself the following:Which channels will allow me to communicate to the greatest number of my targeted audience? Which channels can I afford? Which channels complement my personal brand and position? Which channels are likely to show a positive return on investment? Reach & Frequency Since many Agents you meet today arent ready to do business with you, an integrated campaign provides regular, scheduled contact to develop familiarity and trust. Reach and frequency keep your position fresh in your prospects mind so that they call you instinctively when they need your help. Reach is the number of Agents you expose to your campaign and frequency is the number of times you touch each Agent with it. When determining reach and frequency, follow these two questions: Reach How many targeted Agents must see, read, or hear my campaign during a specified time frame? Frequency - How often should they be exposed to the campaign during this period? Most Wanted Response Your most wanted response (MWR) is the same as a call-to-action. Its when an Agent, whos exposed to your campaign, is told within the context of a message to do something specific, such as, Call today, or Act now! In crafting your MWR ask the following: Does it clearly identify exactly what prospects are to do? Are they learning more about a problem? Watching a demo? Viewing a comparison chart? Let them know upfront what you want so they can determine if it’s something they want. Is the MWR action-oriented? You’d be surprised at the difference in response, in the electronic communication channel, between “Learn How” and “Learn Now.” Given the interactive nature of the medium, an active voice will boost your MWR. Can the prospect easily find your MWR? Make sure that its glaringly obvious and doesnt get lost in the design of your message. You wouldnt want a prospect becoming emotionally involved with a message and missing their instructions for further steps to take. The idea of your MWR is to broadcast a marketing message and encourage potential Agents to act on that message while it is still fresh in their mind. Shock and Awe Integrated campaigning is a systematic strategy that combines all aspects of your marketing and helps you to present a consistent image to your prospects. By establishing consistency using different communication channels, high reach and frequency, and a deliberate most wanted response, you can generate magnetism that delivers a steady line of Agents at your door seeking assistance. Ancient Greek Food - Olives

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By George Christodoulou Today, you go to the store and buy a little container of olives. You can get them in all different shapes sizes colors, and more. You can buy them with pimentos in them or not. Many wonder how this food became such an important part of Greek culture and large part of their diet. Ancient Greeks used olives as there main source of fat instead of meat from animal because they thought it was an unhealthy way of getting fat, since the barbarians (non Greeks) ate that way. In actuality, the barbarians ate meat and their products such as milk and cheese because they were nomadic and had no way of growing an olive tree or preparing olives if they saw any. Preserving olives was possible because there was salt everywhere! Since Ancient Greece was a huge island basically, salt was easily accessible and allowed them to preserve olives with ease. To preserve their olives, first ancient Greeks would gather them while they where not ripe. They left them in eater that they changed every 12 hours with water that contains wood ash and then again cleared the water. It might have taken a week. To decrease the time sometimes they would cut them with a knife. They, oil would come forth from the olives but this was just used to help preserve them. They were then kept in wine, vinegar, and salty water. Olive oil was created to help preserve the olives. Olive oil was a great source of the Ancient peoples diet because it was their main source of fat. You might think that fish was a main source of their diet, but these things were very expensive so common people mainly just had olive oil. It is not as it is today where people eat a large variety of food no matter who they are. Ancient Greece was a very socially unequal place. If you ever dip bread in olive oil, you are carrying out the actions of an aristocratic meal. In ancient times, common Greeks mostly ate porridge and not bread for carbohydrates. Bread was a lot of work to make and was not a common food among them. Today, olives are eaten by anyone who has a few bucks and can walk or drive to a store. Not so in the days of past. Still, ancient Greeks still figured they could turn tiny strange spherical objects on a tree into a delicious and nutritious food for all of the Mediterranean. The End Times & the Lord’s Almighty Purpose

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Joel Peters I have been walking as a Child of Christ for many, many years. He has given me strength when Ive felt like all is lost. He has always been there for me. No matter what is going on in my life good or bad, the Lord is always there. As I contemplate the future and what might be in store for us as Christians on earth in The End Times, I am overwhelmed be a feeling of love for Gods only Son our Lord. He died for us and as long as we put faith in Him, we shall have eternal life. John 3:16 (King James Version) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Can it be that easy? See I believe that it is that we as human beings and simple creatures that walk this earth have a real problem with simplicity and devotion without question. I think it takes tremendous courage and strength to look at things with an open mind and heart and to hold fast to our beliefs, but not hold them so hard that it closes our relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ. I think one of the most challenging areas as we study the Bible is the study of the Last Days and Bible Prophecy. The complexities of the Word make it so the Scripture can be interpreted a lot of different ways. There are gaps The whole clear picture is not given. We can not get our head around everything. We are not wired in a way that we can. You cant be absolutely sure that what you believe is Truth None of us have the whole story. Why did the Lord have the scriptures written in such a way? Why cant we just open up the Book and read about what exactly is going to happen to us as Christians and to those around us? I think we only have to look at human nature to know why? I believe many of us could be given a Miracle right in front of us and we would still doubt maybe even doubt more then if we heard about it through others. So whether it was written perfectly with every detail does not insure that we would accept and understand it. And we still have the sinful nature to battle with. We do need to study the Bible. We need to study the End Times in order to prepare our souls for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. We need to be in the Word because the Word is our connection to Christ. God has a very specific purpose He sent his only Son to the world to die for us And all God asks is we give ourselves to Him and Love His Son for the sacrifice he has made and to follow His Sons teachings The Bible holds the answers to all of lifes problems and provides a glimpse of whats to come. I do not believe it was the Lords purpose for us to figure out what the Last Days will be like and how it will all end perfectly. I think he wants us to understand what we can, but most importantly believe in His Son. Because if we believe in His Son, we will have eternal life. And I think its that simple. Dont get angry, dont argue and dont fret over the details. Simply love the Son of God and do the best you can to understand the Word of God. The End Times is coming; there is no stopping it. There are signs all around us that verify that it is near. Learn everything you can about the End Times. Let God lead you down the path to understanding But trust Gods plan is simple. The End is near and what you need to do is clear… God Bless, Joel PetersCopyright 2006 Joel Peters is the proud owner and administrator of The End Times Forum found at http://www.ThEndTimes.com/forum/index.php The End Times Forum is a community for those interested in learning more about the Last Days, Biblical Prophecy, and Things related to Christianity. The Fun World of Toy Collecting

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Gregg Hall Collecting toys has been a way for adults to stay young at heart no matter how old they get. Despite how much they age on the outside, inside they still retain that childhood pleasure of playing with toys. It’s never too late to start a toy collection and there are many categories to choose from. Think back to what you liked to play with when you were a child and begin from there. Dolls Dolls are a favorite of women collectors. Often, a doll was one of the first toys that a little girl received and the joy of holding them and caring for them can be just as strong now as it was back then. There are many different types of dolls to collect. There are antique dolls, decorative dolls, baby dolls, ethnic dolls and fashion dolls. Some collectors even learn to make cloth dolls such as rag dolls. Others take great pleasure in making clothes and accessories so they can continuously change their dolls appearance. These hobbyists are proud of their collections and will often display them throughout their home. Cars and Trucks Men like to collect cars and trucks, and just like when they were children, they may still make the vroom sound as they push it around. There are also some women who like them too. Cars, such as antique cars can be pricey. There are also kits that allow the hobbyist to lovingly build their favorite models. Other popular cars to collect are matchbox cars. They’re small, so they don’t take up much space and they come in many different models. A popular brand of truck to collect is Tonka. These trucks are work type vehicles, like bulldozers and dump trucks and many men played with them when they were children. They still bring a smile to the face of the men who collect them. Plush Toys Beanie Babies are highly collectible plush toys. They are made by Ty and are adorable representatives of just about every animal there is. They come in beautiful colors and the production for individual toys is limited, which makes them even more collectible. Another popular plush toy to collect is teddy bears. You can buy plain teddy bears or teddy bears that represent a particular era like the Victorian era, or an occupation like a fireman or doctor. Some hobbyists stick to one brand, while others like to collect from a variety of them. Other Toys There are many other kinds of toys to collect such as wooden toys. They have a nostalgic look to them and there are kits to make these as well. You can also collect puppets like marionettes, or hand puppets. The choices are practically endless. By becoming a toy collector, you can leave the stressful adult world behind and re-enter the joyous world of a child. Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. Weight Loss Plateaus: Escaping the Dreaded Doldrums

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Di Roberts Here’s a problem that has reared it’s ugly head for all of us on our way to our healthiest, fittest, and most gorgeous/handsome weight. We have been following along on our chosen plan, doing the workouts and choosing what and how much and how often we eat very carefully and making noticeable progress. But, after a while, for no apparent reason, we seem to get stuck. The scales don’t go down or the inches don’t decrease or the waist to hips ratio won’t budge and we stay right where we are for a week. Then another one. Then another.. And for some time, no matter how we stay the course, we seem to be stuck on this plateau. And that’s the thing. We keep doing what we have been doing, maybe even a bit more of it, and the body has adjusted in its own way. Maybe we have been eating so little the body has gone into starvation mode and is conserving energy and you need a couple of days of higher calorie intake to reassure it. Maybe you need to change the proportions of good carbohydrates to protein one way or the other. Maybe your eat-o-meter has crept up a notch or two and you need to take it back down. Or measure what you plan to eat for the day into five or six portions and keep the metabolism stoked by eating every 2-3 hours. Maybe you need to vary your exercise routine so different parts of the body are more involved. So if your aerobic exercise is centered on brisk walking or jogging, and adding in some hills doesn’t work, try some serious swimming for a while. Add in periods of high intensity. If you’re walking, add in steep hills or steps, taken fast. If you’re jogging, add some sprints of a minute or two at a time. Just don’t let your body get too comfortable doing the same thing all the time. You need to challenge it a bit or it stops progressing. If your job keeps you sitting or standing largely in one place, try adding in short, five minute bursts of activity every half hour to forty-five minutes. Do it long enough and hard enough to raise your body temperature. You could jog in place, do some squats, do some pushups, do some reverse pushups, practice your high front, back, and side kicks, do some V crunches, do something to get some muscle activity going, even isometrics, for about five minutes. You’ll be amazed how much more work you get done and how energized you’ll feel. This is in addition to your regular workouts, of course. If you’re not doing muscle-building body weight or other weight training, learn how to do it and get started. If you are, ramp up the weight or number of repetitions to give the body more to do. Make sure all your body parts are being trained. For example, you might try putting in more work on your core if you’ve been concentrating on your legs, really push those pushups, or do weighted pull ups. If you haven’t been paying much attention to your balance and flexibility training, try making that a bigger part of your routine. Yoga, tai chi, and related exercises have enormous benefits that may not be related to bigger muscles but do wonders for your quality of life. If you haven’t been getting enough sleep lately, try sacking out for a full 7 1/2 - 9 hours. Sleep deprivation has definite effects on weight gain that could be counteracting all your good efforts. Does this mean you need to do all of this at once? Nah, just pick two or three things where you either seem to have slipped a bit off course and correct those or areas where you seem to always be doing things the same way and start with those. To get out of your rut, get out of your rut. Di Roberts, biomedical researcher and veteran of weight loss campaigns, runs a weight loss website that covers the many facets of weight management. Is it Really the Cost of Organic Food?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Denise Palmer I recently had cause, to pause, and began to wonder if the choice to NOT eat organic food is REALLY about the cost……or is it something else? IS IT REALLY ABOUT THE COST OF EATING ORGANIC FOOD? Eating organic food doesn’t COST us time. It doesn’t force us to compromise time we could be spending with our families. It doesn’t dictate when we get up, when we eat lunch, when we go home, or what we do on any particular day of the week. Let’s say, for example, like a J-O-B does. But think about the lengths we go to get a job, or keep a job. Think about the daily sacrifices and long-term compromises we make relative to a job. Yes, we need jobs to provide for our families. But we also need our health to be able to go to those jobs and continue providing for our families for many years to come. Eating organic food simply costs us “dirty paper”; which we call “money”. When we choose to buy organic food, over conventional food, we make the choice to exchange money for healthy, wholesome, chemical free food that nourishes our body and, in return, we get better health, longer life and a TRUE sense of well being. We exchange that same dirty paper for many other things, and what do we REALLY get back in return? * A fancy house. * Nice furniture. * Designer clothes. * Luxury vehicles. * Exotic vacations. * The latest and greatest in technologies and gadgets. * Fast food. With the exception of the last item listed above, some might argue that these things improve the quality of their lives. That’s fine. But how substantial is that “quality of life” and how valuable are these “material things” if you have poor health? It is strongly suggested that the hormones in conventional foods are causing our kids to reach puberty years earlier, which as we all know, is not a natural thing and creates a whole host of issues. It is a scientific fact that there are chemicals and toxins and even cancer causing ingredients in non-organic varieties of foods and beverages we consume regularly. There’s no arguing that there are many products we use daily that are polluting our air and water, slowly but surely, destroying the environment we live in. Yet, every day, we make choices that not only don’t support our health and well being, but actually harm us on a very regular basis. And the EXCUSE we use is “COST”. It struck me that when we really THINK about all the many different ways we spend money, and the justifications we use to support our choices, it’s irrational, even borderline crazy! We are willing to pay a lot of money for things that offer us instant gratification, or that we convince ourselves are good for us and our families. But when it comes to spending a few more dollars per month on eating organic food, many people look the other way and can’t seem to find the justification in it. Many people simply use the “excuse”‘..”we can’t afford it”. Are we taking responsibility for our own health and well being? Are we teaching our children how to make healthier choices for a lifetime, or are we teaching them how to make choices for the moment, in the moment, without any regard for their future? And not only the future of their own health, but the future of their environment; the world they will live in for years to come? Have we become so self-serving that we are incapable of thinking about the world around us and our responsibility to it? So is it really about the COST of eating organic food, or is it about the compromises and the responsibilities we must all make and take? Or are we really saying we don’t want to spend money on organic food, because there is no instant gratification and it requires us to sacrifice other things that we are not willing to give up? The question then becomes, are we willing to DO MORE for ourselves and our families health and well being? Are we willing to eliminate even some of the excess and some of the non-beneficial things in our lives for a lifetime of results? Believe me, I do not stand here in judgment of anyone! There is definitely more I can do for myself, and my family. There are still many ways in which we can take even more responsibility for ourselves, and the environment. But I am convinced it all starts with the way in which we think. If we think spending more on organic food is costly, then it will be. It will cost you something, whether it’s in dollars or lack of convenience, or time, or effort. But if we think healthy. And we honestly examine the ways in which we spend the monies we have now, on a day-to-day, month-to-month basis, I KNOW we can all do more with that money. The cost of eating organic food becomes an issue of what it costs us to NOT eat organic foods. We can all AFFORD to create a healthier life and teach our kids to make healthier choices that will yield everyone bigger and better results for a lifetime. I encourage you to take a moment and as yourself’..is it REALLY about the COST of organic food? It could be your family’s first step towards making small changes that can grow into a lifetime of better choices and improved health.
