What Your Admissions Essay Absolutely Must Be About!

By Michael Conner Over the years when I’ve helped students with their writing and their preparation for college one of the things that has always amazed me is that many students have no idea what their college admission essay should be about. Simply put the essay is about YOU. No matter what the question you are writing about is, no matter how strangely or obliquely the question is phrased YOU MUST WRITE ABOUT YOU. Although the admissions essay is becoming more important every year, it still is NOT the most important part of your application packet. For the vast majority of colleges and universities, the admissions office will use the essay as a tiebreaker. If two students are very close in grades, character, recommendations, and test scores, the student with the better essay has a better chance of being admitted. The admission official is looking for something that will push the applications over into the pile he or she will recommend for acceptance. However, rarely, if ever is an admissions essay going to gain admittance with a weak academic record, lack of participation in high school activities, and poor test scores. So don’t bank on your admissions essay to carry the ball for you. A well-written essay that isn’t backed by academic records and test scores indicate that someone else wrote the student’s admission essay. Take a moment and think about how the admissions official will use your essay and what he or she wants. He or she wants to know something about you. He or she wants to know what makes you more worthy of admission than someone else.When you are writing your essay make it personal. Make it about you! For example suppose you are asked about a person who has affected you, a common question. Think of a person, say your high school German teacher and write about the important things he or she did that influenced you. Note, it doesn’t really have to be true, it just has to make the admissions staff believe that it is true and the teacher has influenced you positively. Try to indicate some growth due to the persons influence. Consider the following essay: On my first day of German class in my freshman year, I almost walked out of the class. Like many of my classmates, I felt confused by the new larger school with the new larger schoolmates and I felt intimidated. When I arrived late to German class, the instructor, Mr. Garrison lectured me in front of the other members of the class. I felt humiliated and was ready to change my schedule. I’m still not sure why, but for some reason I stuck it out. It turned out to be a good thing that I did. Mr. Garrison challenged me. When I didn’t do well on a quiz or mispronounced a word, I could feel Mr. Garrison’s disapproval. When I did well, I didn’t receive overt praise, but I felt proud I had met my teacher’s challenge. It wasn’t easy, but I worked as hard as I could. I ended up getting a C+ my first quarter; less than I had hoped for, but better than many of my friends. I continued to work and got a A- for the semester. I increased my efforts, determined to get a better grade. At the end of the year, I am almost positive there was a twinkle in Mr. Garrison’s eye as he handed me my grade report. I ended up taking four years of German from Mr. Garrison. He taught me a lot, and not just German. He taught me to push myself, he taught me how to learn, most importantly, he taught me never to give up. If I’d run out of Mr. Garrison’s classroom that first day, I don’t know if I would have ever learned these important lessons. I doubt if I would have worked so hard in high school. I doubt if many universities would even consider me for enrollment. Fortunately I didn’t drop out that first day, I have Mr. Garrison to thank for much of my success as a student and my growth as a person. I’ll always remember him and be grateful. Notice that the essay shows progress from a poorer, immature student to one who has gained skills and has grown into a responsible young adult who wants to continue using the tools Mr. Garrison taught him while attending the university. By Kelly O’Brien Every day I talk with professional service providers who do great work, have a valuable service that really helps peopleand struggle to get their services used as much as theyd like. They get a lukewarm response after an initial conversation while networking, the referrals come in but dont convert to real business as often as theyd like, and they cant seem to get prospects to see them as that much better than other professionals offering similar services. Or they may get some attention from prospects as a result of an ad, published article, or speechbut then the early attention kind of fizzles into phone tag and no real client, in the end. So whats the problem? In most cases, theyre not getting far enough with the prospect to reveal the quality of their workso its not about their professional work. And some professionals DO have decent positioning and credibility-building things in place like client testimonials and case studies on their websites (although the latter — done effectively is rare, unfortunately). There are a lot of things that can go wrong in the marketing and sales process. But in most cases, the key thing I see missing is a decent approach to packaging your professional services. Part of successfully packaging your services means putting what you offer into a variety of formats and “packages” that your clients need, at prices theyll pay. Networking and asking for referrals are a waste of time (or are a lot harder), if you dont have something for prospects to easily buya choice of easy “yes’s” in the form of thoughtfully packaged versions of your services. Real Life Examples that Work Here are some examples to illustrate what I mean. These are simple ways to repackage what typically is only offered as consulting services (whatever your specialty may be). Each format offers your clients a different level of commitment, time, and moneyincreasing the chances that youll find the right fit for their needs: * Weekly Coaching to Get & Stay On Track: Good for prospects who hesitate to take that first step or just need a little encouragement to start small. Great for people who need the structure and discipline of a regular meeting (telephone or in person) to keep on track. * Multi-Hour Strategy Session: Particularly useful if you sell to other businesses. A quick, affordable way for prospects to get specific feedback and new ideas on their existing approach to what you offer. * 1-Day Jump-Start Retreat: A more in-depth version of the idea above. Especially useful if you bring a management team together. * Multiple-Day or Monthly Workshop or Clinic: A different way to impart your expertise and help your clients “learn to fish for themselves.” * Quick Audit: An affordable, finite commitment to let a prospect get a small sample of your approach. How do I know that these approaches motivate prospects to become clients? Because I use all of them in my practice and they all get results. My business model represents a mix of revenue streams, none of which is tied completely to a traditional consulting model. For more tips on how to get your services used by offering options through creative packaging, keep reading… Give your prospects choices and youll increase the odds they more quickly turn into paying clients. Heres how: 1. Package your services to offer clients have a variety of ways they can work with you. Think small, then incrementally add steps in larger sizes. Before you know it, youll have a range of ways to help your clients. 2. Give each service a catchy title thats all about how your client will benefit. For example, I offer the “More Clients Than You Ever Thought Possible!” Marketing Clinic and the “Maximize Your Online Strategy” Website Audit. Make the title about your clients, not you. 3. “Productize” your services to generate passive income. Record your public talks and sell them as tapes on your website. Combine sets of articles and sell them as mini-books. These are fairly easy, low-cost things to do. 4. Just because they bought one type of service from you in the past, doesnt mean they wouldnt be interested in new ways you can help them. 5. Don’t be afraid to spell out your range of services in your marketing materials and on your website. Demystify what you do by offering lots of information, including details of what your clients can expect in terms of deliverables, timeframes, targeted results, and what they need to do to ensure success. 7. The bottom line is to use client-centered descriptions and language. Even though this is about your services, it’s not. It’s about how your clients will succeed and what problems they’ll solve by choosing a particular service. I just can’t emphasize this enough! Experiment with a number of packages and see what works and what doesn’t. Play with the variables: title, size, price, description, deliverables, and so on. By Nikola Marshall Bipolar is an illness that is little understood by the general population. Unless you or someone close to you is affected by it, chances are you have a certain amount of misconceptions. A basic working knowledge of the illness is in order. More than two million American adults suffer from bipolar. The illness typically develops in the late teens or early adulthood, although it can manifest in early childhood or later in life. Those affected may suffer for years before being properly diagnosed. Bipolar is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy and ability to function. It can be the source for damaged relationships, poor job performance and even suicide. The good news is that it is treatable! There are two main kinds of bipolar, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is more typical and the more severe of the two. Type 1 has recurrent episodes, or mood swings and is more prone to psychotic episodes. Type 2s never develop severe mania, but milder episodes of hypomania that alternate with depression. If a person had four or more episodes during a twelve month time period, it is considered rapid cycling. An explanation of terms is required here. Dramatic mood swings are referred to as episodes. Psychotic episodes include hallucinations and delusions and these will reflect the mood the person is in at the time. Hypomania is a mild to moderate level of mania. Without treatment, it can become severe or switch to depression. Mixed states are when symptoms appear together, such as agitation, trouble sleeping, psychosis and suicidal thoughts. Both mania and depression have a set of typical symptoms. Manic symptoms can include: increased energy/activity, restlessness, euphoric mood, irritability, racing thoughts, talking fast/jumping from subject to subject, lack of concentration, insomnia, spending sprees, increase in sex drive, abuse of narcotics, aggressiveness, and denial that anything is wrong. Depressive symptoms can include: lasting sad/anxious/empty mood, hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, lack of interest in things once enjoyed, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating/remembering/making decisions, sleeping too much, change in appetite, and suicidal thoughts. Bipolar is a treatable illness. It is up to the patient to follow therapy. If not, their episodes can become more often and become more severe. This is but a very basic introduction to bipolar. It is one of the remaining few mental illnesses with a stigma attached. With education, the public will have a better understanding and eventually, the stigma will be lifted from this illness too. By Joy Gendusa In my plethora of experience I have managed to cull out for you what I consider the best of the best in other words, I took the most proven details about postcards that are significant to you starting a dental postcard campaign and really winning with it. In marketing to your potential patients I want you to understand some key direct mail marketing essentials that will help you to acquire new patients effectively: 1) A postcard is better than something in an envelope. For many reasons, the main one being, with an envelope you cant make your potential patient see your message. People are fast. We see and read very quickly actually much more quickly than we even realize. Think about yourself how fast do you go through your mail and process out what you want to keep and what you dont want to keep? Pretty fast. It takes fractions of seconds to go through and process in your mind bill, bill, advertisement, bill, advertisement, letter And it also takes fractions of seconds to decide whether you are even going to bother giving more attention to the pieces that you designated as advertisements. With a postcard, even if they throw it away, they already saw your message regardless of whether they think they did or not. They saw it enough to either throw it away or keep it or respond to it. And if they tossed it, the next time they get that same postcard in the mail, they’ll see it again - as they throw it in the trash, again. Lets face it - junk mail gets thrown away. And postcards are junk mail just like other advertisements you get in the mail. Although they may be junk mail, postcards get read no matter what even if thrown away without reading them, they get seen. Its like the phoenix rising up from the ashes. Or, perhaps she will put it up on the refrigerator to remind her to call you when she is ready. 2) If you are not doing repeat mail with your postcards you are flushing your money down the toilet. Repeat mailings cannot be repeated enough. DO REPEAT MAILINGS! DO REPEAT MAILINGS! DO REPEAT MAILINGS! A one-shot-in-the-dark postcard mailing is not going to change your practice, your bottom line, your life or your anything. The long and the short of it is, if you are not up to confronting that you need to do a campaign then dont bother being in practice. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh! And the plus point is that people start to really believe you exist when they see your postcard over and over in the mail. It communicates credibility and gives people the idea that you are established and not going to go away. Some people may respond right away a lot of people do not. They want to see if you are a one-shot in the dark kind of dentist or not. Think about all the mail you receive at home and think about the companies that hit you again and again. In your own mind, I’ll bet those companies are more real and more credible then some company you received just one piece of mail from. 3) The best price is not best necessarily the best postcard. The cheapest is not necessarily the best. The old adage you get what you pay for applies here. I know that goes for dentistry as well. You are not going to get the top cosmetic dental surgeon for rock-bottom prices. I am not saying that one cannot get good dental work done for a reasonable cost; all I am saying is that cheaper is not always better. When you are looking for a good postcard company, get whatever potential Postcard Company you interview to send you samples. Make sure the postcard is a very good-quality, stiff card that catches your attention. Get them to give you customer references. Call those references and find out what they think of that companys service, product, etc. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into getting your postcard done right. If they mess up the printing, if they dont get your mailing out on deadline, etc. doing it dirt cheap might not mean getting the quality service you need or want. 4) Although most people, if surveyed, say they like full color on both sides, the truth is black on white on the back of the postcard gets a better response. Why? Because full-color on both sides can be confusing. When people have the option of color on the back they tend to go a little nuts with the design to the point where the recipient doesn’t know where to look first and the message gets completely lost. On the other hand, if you have an aesthetic front - with a great headline - the recipient will just want to turn that postcard over.
