Steps You Can Take To Help Manage Depression And Anxiety

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Sandy Sizemore Depression self help is an option that you have. First off, it is incredibly important for you to seek out the necessary support for your condition. Both depression and anxiety are serious conditions that should not be left untreated. But, there are various degrees of severity offered by them. In some cases, depression self help is not an option. This is very evident when it comes to the treatment of a severe case in which you are thinking about or have attempted suicide. Then, depression medicine is the best way to go at least from this point. Understanding Your Options What many that experience depression do not know is that they do have the ability to explore depression self help options. You do not have to be heavily medicated if you do not want to, unless you are in a very severe case or are suffering from manic depression symptoms. So, what can you do? Here are some things that have been found to help. Alternative treatments for depression include supplements of herbal products. There are many products that offer help from anxiety as well as from depression. Products made from high quality ingredients can be helpful. Purchase these only from reputable providers of quality foods. It is necessary for you to realize that depression self help must focus on your own feelings about yourself. One way in which you tackle your condition is to realize that things may not be as bad as they seem. The negative thinking that is overtaking your mind is not something that is your fault, but part of your depression, a true illness. Do not expect yourself to just wake up and the depression is gone. The fact is that even with the best anxiety and depression treatment, they can linger for a very long period of time. Avoid making life decisions that will affect you or your loved ones when you are feeling depressed. You should seek out the help of those that know and love you for additional help here or postpone decision making until after your depression is lessened. Practice depression self help treatments such as yoga and meditation. These can help the body to regain a tranquil feeling and will ultimately provide you with a bit of healing. Acupuncture is another traditional treatment of depression that you may find help from. Do not set goals for yourself that are too challenging or that provide you with a high level of responsibility. Putting too much pressure on yourself can lead to worsened symptoms of depression. Do not set yourself up for failure. Physical activity is good for the body and the soul. If you get outdoors and do the physical things that you used to enjoy, you will work on restoring your health. Depression self help can include putting yourself into situations that you are familiar with and once loved. Depression self help can and does help. Remember that if you are in severe depression that you should seek out help from your doctor. Even if you do not want to take depression medicine, he or she will help you to find alternative treatments for depression that really will help you. Effect of Mobile Phones on Kids

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrena_Markley]Andrena Markley Today, the fastest growing section of mobile phone users are kids and young people. We cannot deny to the fact that mobile phones appeal a lot to kids and teenagers. But have you ever wondered why mobile phones attract so much to kids? The colour, design and above all the features like ringtones, games, etc attract them so much that they find it hard keep themselves away from the latest phones. However, is it obligatory to provide mobile phones to kids aged 8-12? Well, providing mobile phones to kids may have some pros and cons. But the pros definitely win over the cons. Parents give their children mobile phones so that children can make their use in case of any emergency. Having a mobile phone does provide protection like determining whereabouts of kids. Parents consider mobile phones an effective way to keep in constant touch with their kids. Also kids feel self confident when they are able to communicate with their loved ones. Besides making calls, the kids use mobile phones for sending text messages, playing games, listening to music and downloading ringtones. The latest mobile phones can replace cars, toys, gaming devices and much more. With the drop in the prices of handsets and plans, parents have started giving away pay as you go phones to their children. An interesting survey states that most kids own pay as you go mobile phones. These phones allow kids to be in control by giving them specified amount of minutes to be used in a month. Today, mobile phones are not just phones but also powerful computers which are web browsers, instant messengers and email terminals. So by providing a mobile phone in your kids hands, you are giving them access to the whole world. In the near future, probably mobile phone usage among kids would continue to increase and not surprisingly the average age at which a kid receives a mobile phone will fall. Weigh Yourself Daily in December

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Janice Elizabeth Small Nearly every diet advises you not to weigh yourself too often and there’s a good reason behind that. Weight fluctuates (sometimes by as much as a pound or two) during the course of a day or from one day to the next and this often has nothing to do with how much fat you’ve gained or lost. You may find you weigh less in the morning than you do at night - this doesn’t usually mean that your body has been releasing pounds of fat while you slept but that you have lost a fair amount of water! Weight gained or lost from one day to the next is generally due to retaining or releasing water too - either due to monthly hormone fluctuations or because you’ve been eating (or not eating) foods which are high in sodium. If you take too much notice of the figure on the scales you can get unduly depressed by a high reading or overly confident by a low one. But you’re just registering the differences caused by the amount of water in your body and not fat. Yet I like to weigh myself daily and here’s why. I know that my weight will fluctuate by a pound or two so I don’t let small amounts of weight gain or loss bother me. I just carry on weighing myself every morning before I have my shower. I have a magic figure in my head over which I will not let myself get without doing something about it. This is fixed at 2lbs over my ideal weight (2lbs gives those minor fluctuations a chance to balance themselves out). I never have to do much to get back to my ideal weight. I just become a little more selective in my food choices, move a bit more for a week or two and that’s it. Losing a pound or two is never as much effort as losing twenty! It has worked for me for the last seven years….. But what if you have a long way to go to your ideal weight. How can daily weighing help you then? Well, it’s a great strategy whatever your weight to avoid a backslide. And given that the Christmas season is coming up it’s ideal to avoid piling on the pounds in December. Typically people put on between 5 and 10lbs during the party season. You don’t have to be one of them! Just note your weight at the start of the month and don’t let yourself get more than 2lbs over it! If your weight slips over the 2lb mark, cut back on treats and drinks and make a determined effort to eat healthily and keep up your exercise every day until you’re back to where you were. Daily weighing not only gives you a reality check when you’ve started to indulge a bit too much, it also reminds you every day of your weight loss goals and gives you a reason to stay sensible during the season of festive feasting. And how lovely to wake up in January ready to go forward rather than bitterly regretting how much you let yourself go. Networking You know that person that seems to know everybody…and when they send you a lead, idea or connection of some kind, you know this will be time well spent. Most people understand that networking, or their network, is an important asset when something is needed. The opportunity to help has gotten even easier because of the Internet and online communities like www.linkedin.com and Your Brand Forum at www.yourbrandplan.com/forum. Dictionary.com says networking is to interact or engage in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support. Mutual is the key word in this definition. Actually, the effective networker is less about themself and more about the other person. The commonly used term “bank balance” networking makes a lot of sense and is easy to say, but most people make a withdraw at a time of need and may help only when asked to make a connection. Our great collaborators are always networking - proactively connecting those who can benefit from the awarded relationship. Effective networking is more about asking great questions and learning about the other party. Learning about character and what is important to someone. Building a reputation on great connections on fit is the best way to realize great assistance from your network in return. Trust and awareness become even better terms to define networking. Yes, it takes time to establish trust and provide assistance to others before getting the assistance you deserve. It takes time to fill your account before making the withdraws in financial terms too. People want to help and will. It is a powerful brand to be in a position of trust to help others and you will be rewarded. Others want to be there for you and understand how to be effective in those recommendations. While providing appropriate connections and ideas for others, sprinkle in what your ideal customer or situation looks like - in the event they don’t ask you… About David Sandusky: David built Your Brand, LLC. and programs to help you define yourself, understand your market trends and manage your personal brand with a Strategic Career Plan positioning you to achieve your greatest goals. Being A Friend Through A Divorce

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Kim Dziobak We used to joke amongst the couples we are close to, “who would get custody of the friends in a divorce”. We are a very close group of friends that met in college around 20 years ago, and have remained close through many of lifes changes and transitions. Never did we think that our joke would have to eventually be addressed. The day that my best friend told me that her marriage was in trouble was devastating. Here was a couple that we shared our lives with. Her husband and mine had been roommates the same year that she and I lived together in college. We stood up in each others weddings. We were godparents for one of their boys, they godparents to our son. He helped us build our house. We spent weekends together, holidays, birthdays. Suddenly all that was going to come to an end and I had to think quickly about how I would find balance between two people that I cared about. Through some trial and error, here are some of the things I learned about being a friend to divorcing friends. A. Listen. It is sometimes very, very difficult, but key. You are not going to solve your friends problems, only they can. Allowing your friends to talk about their feelings, or talk through the situation, helps them to start the process of healing. Remember too that as a listener, sometimes the less said the better. Silence can be one of the strongest coach/counseling tools you have in your arsenal. More healing can be done in the silent times than in the talking. Let there be silence when there isnt anything to say. It is really ok. B. Focus on the person that you are talking to, not the spouse. My friend couldnt change her husbands behavior, but she could change how she was responding to him, or how she internalized the things that he said. These were things she could control and growth she could make. Beating him up behind his back will only go so far in making her feel good. C. Dont play favorites. This was the hardest thing for me and continues to be. My best friend was hurt terribly and I instinctively wanted to protect her and validate her. Though I wouldnt often bad mouth him to her, I would do it to my husband, which made things within our relationship stressful. Even though this divorce was the result of some bad decision making on the part of my friends husband, he was still someone she had devoted her life to for ten years, the father of their children and my husbands friend. I needed to always keep that in mind. If you have to rant and rave negativeness, it is best to find a third party or write in your journal. D. Make sure that you do things with your friend that takes his/her mind off their miseries. If you always get together and just talk about the divorce, soon you will get burned out and your friendship will start to struggle. You need to continue to groom the things that made your friendship strong before the marital problems started. Not to mention that your friend is probably eating, sleeping, living the divorce 24/7 and some time off from that will give them a renewed attitude and help them to see that there will continue to be life after their divorce. E. Find ways to continue traditions and make new ones. My friend and I started to get together for our kids to make gingerbread houses at Christmas time before her divorce began. We still do this and have expanded the day to included going out to cut our Christmas tress and exchange gifts. Even though we know that traditions help to normalize things for kids, they can do the same things for adults and again be a reminder that your friends and family are important. Divorce is a stressful and difficult time for both the couple and their friends. It is not unusual to hear that friends felt inclined to choose one person or the other because the divorce made things uncomfortable. With a little hard work and commitment, friendships can continue to grow, flourish, develop, and be successful. Kim Dziobak is a personal coach dedicated to working with individuals and families. Herpes Breakouts? Try Natural Sources of Lysine

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Denice Moffat Lysine is considered an essential amino acid, a component of protein that our body cannot make. Many people use it to assist healing of herpes sores. With other supplements, it can also be effective in the treatment of Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers and hypothyroidism. Lysine can be used topically or taken internally as a free-form amino acid or eaten as natural food sources. Free-form means that the individual amino acid has been isolated from a protein source and is purely a single amino acid. Free-form amino acids are used specifically in righting deficiencies. High lysine foods include corn, poultry, and avocados. Lysine acts to rebuild muscle and repair tissue. Lysine is also important for calcium uptake in the remodeling and building of bones. It also helps in the formation of collagen, hormones and enzymes. Use a high quality amino acid, as they have fewer fillers and you get more bang for your buck that way. I use TwinLabs, Solaray, Source Naturals brands in my practice. One more trick I use in my practice that is quite effective for mouth sores is to recommend that the affected person speak their truth. Once they release the emotions they are holding inside of them, the sores usually go away in less than a week. 2005 by Dr. Denice M. Quick Detox

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Jimmy Sturo Detox, or detoxification, is the removal of toxic substances from the body. The liver and kidneys are natural detoxifiers. In recent times, stress and pollution levels coupled with unhealthy eating habits have increased the risk of heart attacks, diabetes and arthritis. To keep the body functioning properly and to ensure good health, it is advisable to follow a detox program to rid your body of unhealthy toxins that could lead to serious health problems. “Quick detox” is a short program that helps detoxification of the body by ridding it of deadly toxins. The program is spread over a period of 3 days and begins with a decrease in the consumption of coffee, tea, alcohol and other beverages (especially those containing high levels of sugar). Most liquids, other than water, should be substituted with natural fruit juices. Breakfast should be light on the stomach, followed by a light lunch such as pasta. Dinner should consist of a salad with an oil-free dressing. Exercise is also recommended to enhance energy levels. The second day of the program involves replacing juices with water. Breakfast must include fresh fruit, followed by a green salad for lunch with an oil-free dressing and steamed fish with vegetables for dinner. Yoga should be practiced along with the usual gym exercises and stretches. The final day of the program consists of eating fruit and drinking water all day. This may seem a little stressful, and it is advisable to remain less active. In case of listlessness and fatigue, a banana snack would not hurt. Once the 3-day program has been completed successfully, a person usually bounces back to good health. Detox provides detailed information on Detox, Detox Diet, Drug Detox, Alcohol Detox and more. Build New Habits — Payday Will Come –

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Don Monteith Feeling that it never works is not a good excuse. You may even remember last year not getting past February. GOOD intentions. NO success. Dont quit! Every year has a new beginning for each of us. Keep on working at it. NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS You knew that was coming. Wipe the slate clean for 2004. Most of us had a few UPS and some had more DOWNS. There is real power in your mind. Think positives even when it is most difficult. Negatives are destroyers that pull us down into the abyss. Actually, you can make resolutions EVERY day. Hop out of bed with a great attitude. Begin by saying, Good morning, God, what are you and I going to do today? It may surprise you. Negative folk say, Good God, its morning! You decide! DONT QUIT I know! Last year just left you defeated. Every change you were going to make fell by the wayside. None of your resolutions got done. Maybe you OVER reached. Be more reasonable. Dont expect big leaps. Bite off the challenges in small chunks rather than going for the boulder. Success is closer than you think. One step at a time. You can become the happier, healthier person that you envision. All of us like to improve. Theres a sincere desire to learn. To stick with our new diet. To work out at the gym or go to aerobics. Walk a mile each morning or night. Our goal is to eat right; live right; exercise and be our very best. OVER ZEALOUS Suddenly, Im going to change my habits. Our resolutions fill a complete page. All the things we havent been doing. Beginning tomorrow. You have just programmed failure into your New Years resolutions. Too much at once. None of us can handle it. Put down one or two life changing challenges. Maybe you can take on another one or two in another month. Dont overwhelm your psychic all at the beginning. Stretch your goals over time. First, write down your new passions. A full page of resolutions is too much. Select those with the greatest benefit. Leave the others for now. Dont expect perfection. Good intentions pave the road but you need to allow for a detour along the way. BUILDING NEW HABITS Your real goal is to develop new habits. Replace the old ones. NO exercise turns into some exercise. Eating too much turns into pushing away from the table sooner. Drink more water, less cola. Putting your spouse before the children or grands. Doing fun things together. Go to the movies. Out to dinner. Long weekends to the mountains. Dont expect old habits to suddenly disappear. They are still lurking. Trying to get back into first place. Wanting to mess up your plan. Few things are more rewarding than reaching your goal. Even if it takes longer than you expected. Moving in the right direction counts for success. Reach for incremental mile markers. Each step takes us closer to our destination. PAYDAY IS COMING — Keep that in mind. Not necessarily money. A much BIGGER benefit. You quit SMOKING because (you dont want to increase cancer odds; your breathe is cleaner; clothes no longer smell stale; eat in nicer places; kicked a bad habit, etc.) Go on a DIET because (clothes look nicer; you look nicer; you feel better about yourself; cost less for food; and..) Quit drinking because. (Dont want DWI risk; no more acting a fool; risky addiction and family loss; and) Bad habits are hard to break. Only YOU can make the decision. No one can do it for you until you decide. Many times our bad habits are patterns of behavior. Smoking gives us a break and often it comes with dinner and a drink. Must be a social issue. Everyone else is doing it so we do it to be accepted within our social group. SUCCESS TEAM All of us need support when striving to reach goals. Find those with the same mindset and desire to change habits. Working out is always easier in a group. To quit drinking is easier with NON drinkers. Non smokers help us kick the nicotine habit. Cheerleaders are needed. Keep it up! Dont quit. Hold on to your goals. Accountability keeps most of us on track. Do something nice for yourself when you reach incremental levels. Buy yourself a new suit or a new dress when you drop a full size. Make every step a recognizable achievement. Eat at a new restaurant. Go to the movies. Treat yourself to a massage. Relax and enjoy the NEW you. One last admonition. HAVE FUN! In the end (December 2005) you can look back with pride on the success you have enjoyed in the last 12 months. ACTION TIP: A better YOU and ME is worth the investment. Set reasonable goals. Bite off in small incremental pieces. Look for the BIG pay off. Get a support TEAM. Reward yourself for each success level. HAVE FUN in the process of changing your habits. Don Monteith spent 32 years as co-owner of several franchises and a personnel/staffing business. Trying A Liposuction Alternative

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Michelle Bery With the availability of plastic surgery in todays world, its no wonder that more and more of us are turning to medical intervention. But the costs, risks, and recovery associated with liposuction should give interested parties pause. Instead, experimentation with a liposuction alternative could yield much the same results as surgery without the negatives associated with such a medical procedure. Liposuction is a surgical procedure wherein the surgeon makes tiny incisions around an area that is storing an excessive amount of body fat. Through the incisions, an instrument is inserted that literally vacuums the fat from the body. Most often, the patient is put under general anesthesia and, of course, there are always risks associated with that. Further, the surgeon very actively removes the fat during a liposuction procedure pushing the instrument into the body firmly. This can leave the patient feeling sore afterwards. If you consider the risks and recovery associated with liposuction, you can understand why more and more people are seeking a liposuction alternative to achieve the desired results for their body. Additionally, the truth about liposuction is that it in no way takes the place of proper diet and exercise. You can not simply have a liposuction procedure in order to lose weight and then continue to eat poorly and live a sedentary lifestyle. Liposuction is by no means a magic bullet; and the patients who think that it is are very often sorely disappointed. Rather, the very principles of a healthy lifestyle are the most effective liposuction alternative. Eating a healthy diet rich in whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins will go a long way to transforming your body. Not only are you protecting yourself against a variety of illness but you are literally sculpting lean muscle mass through diet. Of course, the second portion of this is consistent physical exercise. Your program should combine cardiovascular work with weight training to achieve a well-toned body. When addressing the trouble spots that so many people turn to liposuction to solve, you may want to consider working with a personal trainer as a liposuction alternative. A trainer can show you how to target these spots with specific exercises that achieve results. You may find that once you begin implementing a liposuction alternative that the thought of surgery becomes less and less attractive. Research some methods that may work for you; when it comes to avoiding surgery, it is certainly worth the try. For easy to understand, in depth information about liposuction visit our ezGuide 2 Liposuction.
